Trip Overview:

This youth programme is subsidized by White Squall to encourage teens to experience the fun and beauty of a Georgian Bay trip.  We will meet at the Paddling Centre on the first morning for a complete orientation and introduction to the group and trip staff.  It’s best if parents can say goodbye at this point unless they have been asked to provide car transport to the put-in.  For the rest of the morning, we will be out on Cole Lake going over the basics of paddling and safe kayak travel, including doing some wet exits and rescues.  After a hearty lunch, we’ll head out to a local access point (eg-Snug Harbour)

The first night will be spent out on a nearby island.  During this 4 day programme, we will focus on teaching fundamental skills in;  paddling-rescue-navigation-food prep-campsite selection-minimum impact camping-group leadership.  Both beginning and more experienced paddlers will be challenged to develop skills at their own pace.

We will return to White Squall by late afternoon on the last day. As with all trips, we’re at the mercy of the weather and mother nature, so don’t be surprised if all of this changes.

Trip Overview:

View from cabins at Diamond Key Resort - photo: Todd Sechel

We will meet at Camp Dore - west side of Key River / Hwy 69 on the first morning to catch our boat shuttle out to Diamond Key Resort at the mouth of the Key River. Once settled we'll meet for introductions and orientation. The intent of the trip is to paddle and explore returning each nights to our cabins.  Gerard will only interpret the landscape as participants show interest, as we don’t want to be in your face about it.  You can soak up as much or as little as you wish.

Depending on weather, the location will vary however the general region will be the northeastern part of Georgian Bay which includes the French River Delta, Henvey Inlet, & the island country to the west and south of Key river which includes - Churchill Islands, One Tree.   We will come back to our cozy cabins for dinner and sleeping each night. The natural history of this area is quite diverse and it’s no wonder the UN has designated it an International Biosphere Reserve.

Our five days will be a fun mix of relaxing, paddling and exploring – with Gerard able to answer any questions you might have about weather, rocks, plants, birds and animals.  We’ll be back to the Key River / Hwy 69 parking lot by late afternoon of the last day. As with all trips, we’re at the mercy of the weather and mother nature, so don’t be surprised if all of this changes.

“Things to Know About Diamond Key Cabins”

We’re very excited about our first year with Diamond Key, and we’re lucky that they have opened up their site for us.  Diamond Key is nestled in the northeastern corner of Georgian Bay amongst some of the finest freshwater paddling waters in the world.  Please know that it’s not a resort in the sense of a southern Ontario full service facility.  It is an extremely well-kept traditional Georgian Bay fishing camp with a full septic, drilled well, showers and the best evening sunsets in the world.

Meeting Place & Site Description
Unless otherwise notified, we’ll gather at White Squall Paddling Centre at 8:45am on the first morning.  From there we’ll sort out vehicles and travel up to Key River Marina (a 45 minute drive).  From there we’ll load up and take a boat westwards out Key River to the camp situated where it meets the open Bay (a 45 minute trip). Imagine a group of cabins tucked in the rock of the Canadian Shield looking out to the islands and channels of the northeastern Bay.  The cabins have bedrooms, kitchen area, inside washrooms and shower –and a cozy woodstove for a rainy night.  It’s a little piece of paradise and we know you are going to have a great time.

Meals & Bedding and Your Own Room!
For this season only, there is no extra trip charge to be at Diamond Key - we’ve absorbed some cost and Diamond Key has done the same, in order to see if this adventure will work! Couples will get their own room, and others will share a room with another trip-mate of the same gender.  If you would like your own room, the extra charge is $75/night. White Squall staff (along with your help we hope!) will prepare meals inside the cabin which has a full stove and fridge.  The camp will provide a clean sheet/pillow. Please bring your own towel and sleeping bag along with your regular paddling clothing and gear.  The swimming is awesome, so don’t forget your suit!

Snacks, Drinks, Fishing  & Socializing!
We’ll serve wine with the evening meals.  If you would like to bring along special beer or wine, please feel welcome.  We simply ask you to do this is in moderation to ensure everyone’s safety. Favourite snacks, games or a small musical instrument are always great to bring along.  If you fish, this is the place-but don’t forget your licence!

Boats
Due to the logistics of getting boats out there,  in advance we’ve put 4 single & 2 tandem poly sea kayaks out at the camp. If want to use your own boat, it may be possible, however there is no discount and you’ll be asked to pay for a separate boat shuttle, so please contact us if you want to pursue that option.

So.....let us know right away if you want your own room or want to bring your own boat.

It’s possible that we may share the site with another group or we’ll be the only ones on site as the couple who manage the camp could be off camping in their boat.

From Diamond Key,  there is a lifetime of exploring in all directions. We think you’re going to be delightfully surprised at all the paddling opportunities at our doorstep!

This is all a fun experiment and we want to thank you for your understanding in this first year!!

Gerard Courtin - Ecology Trip White Squall
Gerard Courtin

The trip staff consists of a lead guide and an assistant guide, with an apprentice leader often coming along for training.  The lead guide is trained in Advanced Wilderness First Aid and has advanced kayak and rescue skills along with formal White Squall guide training.  Typically, they are certified national instructors with Paddle Canada and have many years of tripping and guiding experience.  The assistant guide is likewise highly trained and is often in a co-leadership role with the lead.  The apprentice has been chosen for his/her outdoor skills and is in a learning position.

Gerard Courtin is our resource staff for the Ecology Trip-and he’s the reason it’s one of our most popular offerings.   Gerard Courtin has been part of White Squall for a very long time. A serendipitous collaboration - we taught him a bit about kayaking - he continues to teach us a lifetime of things about the natural world. Gerard's early schooling was in England and then he emigrated to Canada in 1953. After working on a farm for a year, he embarked upon a BSc at the University of New Brunswick.

Married in 1960 to Barbara, he found work at Brookhaven National Laboratory for two years before doing his MSc and PhD in alpine ecology at the University of Illinois. In 1968 he signed on with Laurentian University to teach plant and alpine ecology. Gerard gets around - he's been up to Devon Island in the high arctic with the International Biological Programme. He's taught for years at Cornell University's Marine Lab off the coast of Maine as well as at the Centre for Northern Studies in Vermont. Just to make sure he doesn't get bored, Gerard conducts workshops for Ontario Police in forensic botany and ecology.  Gerard is an award-winning teacher and professor Emeritus at Laurentian. So where does White Squall fit in? Well sir.....Gerard is also our resident ecologist, guide, storyteller and all round nice guy.. He's completely dedicated to his friends and students. With Gerard on board, you'll get the best information and energy one could ever ask for in interpreting the world around us.

Special Clothing or Equipment Needed:

Please refer to the Pre-Trip Information Package for a complete list of clothing to bring.  We’ll also send you that list upon registration.  Follow it carefully and if you have any questions, please get in touch. For Ecology, we recommend bringing binoculars if you have them, and any field guides you like using.  A small magnifying glass is fun and some like to bring a notepad as none of us can ever remember all the things Gerard said!

Adventure Trips - We travel most days, with some longer days in the boat. We might have to paddle longer days (up to 7 hours) but not every day. You need basic paddling & rescue skills mastered with previous camping experience.
Meeting Place: White Squall Paddling Centre - see maps & directions (unless otherwise notified).

Meeting Time: 8:45 am sharp – please arrive for 8:30 am - We'll meet at 8:30 am for coffee, tea & onsite orientation. Then at 8:45 sharp start with an introductory meeting an overview of the trip. Then it’s time to jump in our vehicles and head for the Bay.

Trip Overview:

The intent of this trip is to show off the best paddling route on Georgian Bay and the one White Squall began over 23 years ago.  We’ll meet at the White Squall Paddling Centre on the first morning for introductions and orientation.  Then we’ll head for Snug Harbour or Dillon – access points for our trip.  We may ask you to drive your car, or you may be asked to leave it at White Squall and carpool with others.  Once there, we’ll load up our boats and have lunch.  Then it’s off to the Franklin Island crown land reserve or Shawanaga Inlet for our first night’s camp.

From there, we’ll either head out to the Minks or McCoys depending on wind direction for a six day journey through a very special Island archipelago - Big McCoy, Little McCoy, Green Island, the Minks, Red Rock Lighthouse, Snake Island, the Cathcarts (locals call it pinky due to the colour of the rock). Out there, you feel like you’re on an ocean-yet the paddling is protected and offers much to explore.   We will try to camp early each day so that you can enjoy lots of time for relaxing and swimming ( it’s the best freshwater swimming in the world!)  For those who want to work on paddling or rescue skills, the guides will be happy to go paddling with you once camp is set up.

The last day we'll paddle back to Snug Harbour having a final lunch enroute, arriving back at White Squall in the late afternoon - tired, happy and ready for a good night’s sleep! As with all trips, we’re at the mercy of the weather and mother nature, so don’t be surprised if all of this changes.

Trip Overview:

The intent is to kayak out to  some spectacular island country west and north of Parry Sound.  We will likely make two or three camps out in the geologically diverse Mink and McCoy Islands.  This archipelago of  islands is a wild landscape of pine, glaciated rock and sheltered channels.  David will lead walks and paddleabouts among the islands, giving you lots of opportunities to ask questions and discover the wonders of these ancient islands formed of heat, pressure and time. Weather permitting, we may venture out on an exploratory daytrip to the Limestone Islands, a remnant of more recent events and record of oceans past.  With David’s help, you’ll come away with a much deeper appreciation of why this Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve is so very special.

We’ll return to White Squall in the late afternoon of the last day. As with all trips, we’re at the mercy of the weather and mother nature, so don’t be surprised if all of this changes.

After dinner each evening, Doug will lead a discussion on astronomy choosing different topics each night. He always manages to build in specific topics brought forth by participants during the trip.  We tend to stay up late each night (but folks can turn in whenever they desire) and then have more leisurely mornings and breakfasts. Trip Overview:

Diamond Key Resort on Georgian Bay, Key River, Harbour White Squall Paddling Centre Yoga Adventure Base Cabin Trip
View of docks at dusk at Diamond Key Resort - photo: Todd Sechel

We are really excited to bring back our Yoga trip for this summer. We’re making it co-ed so guys can take join in, and we’ll be staying in cabin(s) at the Diamond Key ResortTheresa Gregory is the resource instructor, and she’s not only highly experienced and well trained, but also a lot of fun to learn from.

The plan is to be shuttled out to the camp by motor boat on the morning of Day 1.  After an orientation and settling in, we’ll have lunch. Then it’s off to the boats for an afternoon of exploring the local waters.  Each day we’ll plan a daytrip in the areas to the north, south and west of camp, returning each evening for supper and relaxation.

Yoga will be integrated as time and opportunity arise.  Key stretching and practice times will be in the morning and evening, and you can opt in and out as you wish.  We recommend you bring a yoga mat for the times when we can work out on the smooth rock.  The emphasis is how yoga practice can help our bodies be more effective and relaxed in the challenges of paddling.

“Things to Know About Diamond Key Cabins”

For this season only, there is no extra trip charge to be at Diamond Key-we’ve absorbed some cost and Diamond Key has done the same, in order to see if this adventure will work!

This is all a fun experiment and we want to thank you for your understanding in this first year!!

This trip is aimed at giving you the best of a White Squall sea kayak adventure, while still having plenty of time for swimming and relaxing.  There’s nothing better than spending time out on the Cathcarts, a group of islands a few hours paddle from Snug Harbour.  We’ll set up a base camp and from there head out to explore hundreds of islands and channels in the nearby area.  The landscape varies from the low beaches of Sandy Island, to the craggy backdrop of Bateau to the wave washed rocks of the outer Cathcarts.  On a trip like this, you can paddle as much as you want.  With camp set up, it allows plenty of time for exploring by boat or you can take it easy and read a book or go for a swim.  The possibilities are endless!!!

Youth Quest - August 26-29 ( 4 Days) - $ 390.
Youth Kayak Adventure Trip on Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada
Silly youth trippers on Georgian Bay - Photo by Kathy Dyer.

Meeting Time: 8:45 am sharp – please arrive for 8:30 am - We'll meet at 8:30 am for orientation. Then at 8:45 sharp start with an introductory meeting and overview of the trip.

Trip Overview:

Teens with previous trip experience are invited to finish off the summer in style. This programme is subsidized by White Squall and designed to provide co-ed participants 14  to 17 years of age with a solid base of outdoor skills which will foster responsible leadership. Designed to build on skills learned during Youth Adventure (or equivalent experience) - which includes basic paddle/rescue skills & camping experience. This programme will be a fun yet challenging sea kayak journey on Georgian Bay. Participants will be instructed and encouraged to master fundamental paddling, rescue and safety skills and will have the opportunity to function as group leader during the programme.

Day 1 -  We will meet at the Paddling Centre on the first morning for a complete orientation and introduction to the group and trip staff.  It’s best if parents can say goodbye at this point unless they have been asked to provide car transport to the put-in.  For the rest of the morning, we will be out on Cole Lake reviewing paddling and safe kayak travel, including doing some wet exits and rescues. In the afternoon we'll load up and leave for Snug Harbour or another put-in determined by the leaders.

The rest of the days will be spent paddling through the island country to the west of Parry Sound setting up new campsites each evening. Afternoon and evening teaching sessions will include: rescue scenarios, bracing, rolling, weather forecasting, island ecology, meal prep and navigation. Participants will be asked to plan and lead part of the day's travel, taking into account all factors including group needs.

The trip will return before supper, about 5 pm on Day 4. As with all trips, we’re at the mercy of the weather and mother nature, so don’t be surprised if all of this changes.

We see this programme as an important building block for those who want to learn more about the knowledge, skills and judgement necessary in outdoor leadership. Many White Squall staff got their start through this programme! We also want to have fun, learning and sharing in an island wilderness that is very special.

Trip Overview:

September is a time for relaxing, without the hustle and bustle of summer visitors.  The waters are warm, and the islands uncrowded.  We’ve designed this trip to take in the best of the northeastern Georgian Bay - a near wilderness without compare.  We’ll gather at Key River / Hwy 69 on the first morning to catch our 45 minute boat ride out to Diamond Key Resort at the mouth of Key River. We’ll have both single and tandem kayaks along with paddling equipment waiting out there for us. Once settled in at the camp, we’ll have lunch. Yippee! Then we’ll do a complete orientation and  jump in our boats, spending the afternoon exploring the beauty of the surrounding coast and islands.

We’ll stay at Diamond Key and from there take exploratory daytrips through sheltered channels and inlets. For those wishing to take it really easy, you can stay and read, swim or have an afternoon nap. On the last day we’ll pack up and head for home, but not before a final hearty farewell lunch. As with all trips, we’re at the mercy of mother nature, so don’t be surprised if plans change a bit.

Trip Overview:

The fall is our most favourite time to paddle!  But we’ve not offered an October trip before as the weather can sometimes be a wee bit cold and wet.  It can also be absolutely spectacular-warm and sunny!

This year we decided to throw caution to the wind and invite you to join us out on the Minks and McCoys for this “farewell to summer”  tour. You need to be an active paddler and camper who doesn’t mind if it starts to get a bit cold or rainy.  The reward is to see the Bay as it gets ready for the quiet time.  We’ll meet at our Centre on the first morning, and then head down to our put-in. From there we’ll aim to get out to our first night’s island campsite by mid to late afternoon. The next few days will be spent exploring this wild island archipelago, returning in the afternoon of the last day. It’s a fascinating time to be on the Bay and we hope you can join us!

Trip Overview:

This trip begins as autumn starts to take over the Bay landscape. We’ll meet at our Centre on the first morning, and then drive up to our put-in Bayfield Inlet (about 45 minutes)  We’ll pack our boats and have a bite to eat, and then begin to wander west and northwards towards historic Byng Inlet and the outlet of the Magnetewan River.   We get the best of open Bay coastline, along with lots of inner channel and island hopping. The distance we need to cover is not great, so there’s plenty of time for exploring and taking the time to really have a close look at the creeks and wetlands as well as the wave-washed rocks and islets. Once camp is set up (usually by mid afternoon) you will be able to take part in late afternoon and evening paddles and hikes,  or you can sit back and enjoy a book to end your day. We’ll arrive at Byng Inlet in the afternoon of the last day – a quiet and pretty backwater, but once one of the busiest sawmilling ports on Georgian Bay.
